Course Description

Scratch is a super-fun way to introduce your child to the wonders of Coding!  Drag, Drop, Click… you’ll be amazed at what they can do!  NextGen's curriculum keeps things fresh and introduces kids to new and cool ways to practice, create, and design code with Scratch.

In this course, Junior Coding for grades K-2 and Beginner Coding for grades 3-5 are held together, but taught separately using two similar, but different coding platforms and different sets of lesson plans.  If this course is full, please kindly join the Waitlist... if there is enough interest, we will work with the school to create two courses separated by grades in order to provide a more cohesive learning environment for our students.  Thank you.

Junior Coding with Scratch Junior® (K-2)

NextGen SmartyPants teaches Junior Coding using the Scratch Junior® Graphical Programming Language across four increasingly challenging levels:

  • Level 1 - Introduction to Coding Concepts
  • Level 2 - Cartoon Animation and Storytelling
  • Level 3 - Playground Games We Play
  • Level 4 - Designing Our Own Video Games

Each of these levels are a different course.  Coding is a complex and challenging topic.  Students are encouraged to register for this program multiple times and will be provided higher level lesson content each time.  These may be during after-school programs, or during camps over Winter, Spring, or Summer Break.  This gives Students the ability to build off previous lessons, gain practice, and establish proficiency over time.

Beginner Coding with Scratch® (Grades 3-5)

NextGen SmartyPants teaches Beginner Coding using the Scratch® Graphical Programming Language across four increasingly challenging levels:

  • Level 1 - Introduction to Scratch: Sprites, Scripts, Brackdrops, Loops, and Music
  • Level 2 - Broadcasting, Decisions, and Variables
  • Level 3 - Clones, Custom Blocks, and Boolean Logic
  • Level 4 - Controlling Motors and Robotics using Scratch

Each of these levels are a different course.  Coding is a complex and challenging topic.  Students are encouraged to register for this program multiple times and will be provided higher level lesson content each time.  These may be during after-school programs, or during camps over Winter, Spring, or Summer Break.  This gives Students the ability to build off previous lessons, gain practice, and establish proficiency over time.

Parents of students in Grades 3-5, please create a free account for your child at https://scratch.mit.edu.  This will enable your child to save their work so that they can continue to work on their projects from home.  We encourage Parents to explore the platform, check out advanced tutorials and projects, and enjoy the process of learning to Code with your child.  Python, Javascript, and more advanced coding languages will use similar drag-and-drop capabilities in future Robotics and Coding courses.

Waitlist

If the course is full, please join the Waitlist.  We use the Waitlist to gauge interest in our programs and, if necessary, add additional classes or run the program again next Semester.  There is no charge to be on the Waitlist; but if for some reason we are not able to accommodate everyone, you will, of course, receive a full refund.

Additional Information for Parents:

Refund Policy

NextGen SmartyPants STEM courses are complex.  Classes build on previous weeks in order to teach Students more advanced lessons.  If your Student tries it and really doesn't like our program, just let us know after the first class and we will refund you completely.  This will allow us to offer the program to other families on the Waitlist without much disruption.  Refunds are not available after the first class.  Thank you for your understanding.

Payment Plan
For those who prefer it, a Payment Plan is offered at check-out on the following screen.  This plan is optional and is administered by an outside company that charges a nominal fee.
