Description

Course Description

Scratch is a super-fun way to introduce your child to the wonders of Coding!  Drag, Drop, Clickyou’ll be amazed at what they can do!  NextGen SmartyPants' project-based learning curriculum teaches Students, not just to copy code off of paper, but to design their own code and create their own solutions to solve problems.

Beginner Coding with Scratch® (Grades 3-5)

NextGen SmartyPants teaches Beginner Coding using the Scratch Graphical Programming Language across four increasingly challenging levels:

  • Level 1 - Introduction to Scratch: Sprites, Scripts, Brackdrops, Loops, and Music
  • Level 2 - Broadcasting, Decisions, and Variables
  • Level 3 - Clones, Custom Blocks, and Boolean Logic
  • Level 4 - Controlling Offline Motors and Robotics using Scratch

Each Level contains (12) 1-hour lessons.  Most Students will register for this program multiple times.  Students do not need to choose a level prior to enrollment - NextGen SmartyPants Teachers are trained on all levels and will adjust curricula accordingly to fit the experience level of the Student.

Additional Info for Parents:

  • Parents, as you look to consider Coding programs offered by other providers, please be aware that many of them push Python and other platforms to younger and younger age groups.  Most Students that come to us after taking these programs have little understanding of how to design coding solutions of their own.  In reality, Coding is very complex, with adult degree programs dedicated to learning it.  While it may be expedient, we ask that your child not be rushed into pursuing these higher levels.  Establishing a strong foundation in Coding concepts, will help them write higher-quality code; and enjoy the process of learning Coding languages over the long-run.
  • Robotics is the integration of Coding, Engineering, Circuits, and Sensors.  For this reason, NextGen SmartyPants' curriculum is centered around Robotics, where Coding is a key component.  Exposing your child to these other disciplines will help them see how Coding impacts and is impacted by these other disciplines, providing them a complete picture of how Coding is applied in the real world.
  • NextGen SmartyPants was founded in 2016 by a former Norfeldt Parent.  We are proud to continue serving our community

Waitlist

If the course is full, please join the Waitlist.  We use the Waitlist to gauge interest in our programs and, if necessary, add additional classes or run the program again next Semester.  There is no charge to be on the Waitlist; but if for some reason we are not able to accommodate everyone, you will, of course, receive a full refund.

Refund Policy

If your Student tries and really doesn't our programs, just let us know after the first class and we will refund you completely.  This will allow us to offer the program to other families on the Waitlist.

Payment Plan
For those who prefer it, a Payment Plan is offered at check-out on the following screen.  This plan is optional and is administered by an outside company that charges a nominal fee.
